Cecropia moths are giant silk moths that are native to North America. Today we noticed one hatched out in the middle of winter. Here's are quick 5 magical facts about the cecropia moth.

  • Cecropia moths are the largest moths in North America. Even North America's largest lepidoptera.
  • Like there other relatives like polyphemus and luna moths, they hibernate as cocoons during the harsh winters. Then hatched in spring.
  • Although they are known to live for 2 weeks as adults, they have absolute no mouth parts as adults. They store there food in there body fat.
  • The adult cecropia moth goal is to mate for life then breed on there host plants.
  • When they feel threatened they may slowly move there wings around as a threat gesture.
